How do you present a project on a single page?
Context-o-Matic:
One of our clients has requested assistance in drafting the basic concept of a project. The requirement is that the project idea includes a work breakdown structure, risks and assumptions, resources and budget, key performance indicators, and other essential elements—all presented on one page. The client specifically does not want traditional descriptive project charters or similar outdated formats for initial project descriptions. What recommendations can we provide to him?
LOGFRAME
One of the most straightforward yet effective tools for structuring a project is the logical framework, commonly known as the logframe. This tool has evolved over the history of project management and is widely utilized in projects funded by the European Union. It is an integral part of a broader collection of tools and techniques known as Project Cycle Management (PCM)1. While there are various versions of the logframe document, the simplest format is:
| Overall objectives ( impact) | Indicators (SMART) | Source of Verification | |
| Specific objectives ( outcomes) | Indicators (SMART) | Source of Verification | Assumptions |
| Results (outputs) | Indicators (SMART) | Source of Verification | Assumptions |
| Activities | Resources | Budget | Assumptions |
The PM² Project Management Methodology1 was developed by the European Commission to assist project managers in effectively managing the entire lifecycle of projects, thereby delivering solutions and benefits to their organizations. While it was initially designed for European Union institutions and projects, this methodology is applicable to various organizations.
One of the many valuable tools offered by PM² is the Canvas, which provides a concise overview of the project’s scope, work breakdown structure (WBS), deliverables, assumptions, and other critical components. It can be likened to a “logframe on steroids.”
